Read to Self

So great see children engrossed in a good book. Whilst they are building their stamina they are also practicing and integrating all those brilliant reading skills they are learning.

Do you have any ideas for Read to Self?
How many minutes are your class up to?

Hi Guys
Read to Self is up and running. I am finding it is really important to stress the purpose of why they are reading. We are up to around 10 minutes. I want to establish one thing at a time.
On twitter the suggestion came that students can start to choose between two of the Daily 5 once those things are established so I think I will do that.

Hi Kate,
I agree about the importance of why they are reading. Loved being in your class today and seeing what's happening in your room!
Are you seeing the kids more engaged or are they just looking like they are reading? What behaviours are you seeing that you need to refocus?
Was the suggestion to choose between two rounds after Read to self is under control?

My students are around 11 minutes but we've stalled there this week as I found they'd developed the ability to sit in silence and appear as though they were reading for an extended amount of time, when in reality when I looked more closely I still had a few with books that were too hard for them staring at the ceiling or just flicking through pages.. Although most were very engaged I thought it best to go back to the original stamina building and really start pulling up those last few students this week. I'm hoping that re-modeling all these behaviors and going back to shorter bursts will assist these last few students to become more engaged. I think this will also be assisted once library starts and they can borrow as the students that are most engaged are the ones that have brought their own books from home.

I really feel as though my students are all generally reading properly in our read to self time! They appear so engaged in this session, although their level of engagement varies from day to day.

Before reading to self we view the I Chart or discuss the behaviours they should show and I always emphasise they need to UNDERSTAND what they are reading. The more we focus on Good Fit Books and CAFE strategies the more I've noticed 2F's stamina building. I had one child who was continually displaying the shortest stamina and I guided her with selecting her books for this week and she has been engaged! We set our record today at 11mins 22seconds.
